Much ado at new Sustainability Center

As the new APPLE Sustainability Center gets under way, more and more activities are starting to pop up. Some are more social than others.

In a newsletter post from the center, there will be a “Happy Apple Hour” shindig 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Matteo’s Public, located at 300 Commercial Street in Nevada City.

“Just buy a beer or some food and enjoy good conversation with the green/sustainability crowd in a festive setting,” the newsletter said.

This will be something they’ll try and keep going every other Thursday.

There’s also mention of a need for volunteers at the center. Here’s a rundown of what the center needs to get going for its Sept. 20 opening from Mali Dyck, executive director:

There are only a few weeks left to experience the APPLE Center’s energy efficiency project at our new location, 412 Commercial Street, Nevada City. The demolition work is complete, and volunteers have been framing walls and learning about creating a tight air-barrier as they go (see photo below). Tom DeMaranville, our project leader and energy efficiency consultant, is doing a great job of explaining why each step of the process is important, to keep our conditioned space comfortable and healthy for years to come (and to keep our energy bills low!)

Here’s our schedule for the next 3 weeks, and you can also view the complete schedule here. We need 5 people signed up every day for a 2 to 4 hour shift. Call Mali Dyck at 913-7820 to sign up or to get more information.

This week (July 27-31) we need electricians, carpenters and drywall hangers. We are always looking for extra hands to help clean up, handle materials, organize and make dump runs.

This weekend (August 1-2) we need helpers to use foam guns to seal up all the cracks around the walls and ceiling. No particular skills are required, just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a desire to understand how we turn energy-sucking buildings to energy-efficient ones!!

Next week (Aug 3-7) we need to hang drywall in the ceiling to prepare it for Mitch’s Drywall, who generously offered to tape and texture it professionally for us.

The following week (August 10-14) Both Sierra Insulation and Insulation solutions Have generously donated the Insulation to to install blown-in cellulose insulation in the walls and ceilings

August 17-21, the Cal. Building Performance Contractors Assoc. (CBPCA) will teach a field training class at the Center to install new HVAC equipment and do the foam gun air sealing in the attic.

If you can’t volunteer but want to contribute, we need about $5000 more to complete this project. Your donations are welcome and tax deductible. Send checks to APPLE Center, 412 Commercial Street, Nevada City, CA 95959.

Other ways to get involved: Sit at our booth at Summer Nights on July 29, or at the Nevada City Farmers Market on August 8, or volunteer to join a committee on program development, grand opening event planning, or volunteer coordination — or just call Mali Dyck at 913-7820.

So if you’re interested, contact Dyck and she’ll get you up to speed.

  1. Thanks for sharing the good words about the Sustainability Center–it’s such an awesome project for the city and as a model for other areas.

  2. Thanks Shawn. We’ll see where the city takes it.
