Take that Mr. and Mrs. York!
Great America is officially going to oppose the new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara. It’s a big “snag” for the 49ers management because they were hoping to move into the theme park’s parking lot. No, seriously. It’s either that, or they have to pony up the money to buy the park ground anyways. As cheap as the 49ers are, I don’t see that happening.
Here’s what came across the wires:
49ers stadium plan hits snag
SAN FRANCISCO β The San Francisco 49ersβ plan to build a new stadium in Santa Clara appears to have hit a snag.
Team spokeswoman Lisa Lang and Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone say the owners of the Great America theme park β which sits next to the proposed stadium site β plan to formally oppose the project.
Lang says officials with park operator Cedar Fair Entertainment Company of Sandusky, Ohio, informed the team of its intentions.
A Cedar Fair spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.
Lang says the decision could result in the 49ers eventually buying Great America. She says Cedar Fair previously has indicated it may be interested in selling the property, and the team might be interested in solving a lingering parking problem.
This is a good thing. Damn it, this is a really good thing. Just yesterday, San Francisco’s Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that he was working with former 49ers team president Carmen Policy on ways to revitalize a plan to keep the 49ers in San Francisco, hopefully in the Hunter’s Point area. If Policy’s history is accounted for, there is a good shot that something can actually get done. Policy helped get a former proposition passed in San Francisco to help pay for a new stadium. Only problem was, the deal never materialized. I’m guessing because of a change of ownership. I.E. York.
I’m just hoping that the Yorks can stop being arrogant and get back to the negotiating tables already. I’d hate to call them the Santa Clara 49ers, and until today, that’s what it was looking like.
