Why Monta Ellis will shine this season

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Basketball, Videos at 9:54 am by addisport

I do not doubt for minute that Monta Ellis is the future of the Golden State Warriors. The team is saying so, both in words and now in contract, signing the dual guard to six years and $66 million Friday.

But it’s his play that keeps me believing in this young man. He’s got the tools, the intangibles and the humble demeanor to provide a particular personality the W’s need going forward. He’s a hard worker who puts his head down and just goes to work.

In this offseason, the combination of signings and departures in the W’s camp all points to an increased, yet balanced load geared in Ellis’ direction. As I wrote in my column, he’ll have Corey Maggette, Stephen Jackson, Marcus Williams and hopefully Andris Biedrins. With Anthony Randolph coming in the mix, Brandan Wright coming of age and Al Harrington still doing his thing, the W’s have a solid group. I’m still looking for a bruiser down low, but I can live knowing that at least the team has three bona fide stars.

All of this points to a singular thought and feeling, Ellis will do nothing but succeed in this situation. He’s got the right mix of talent around him and an undeniable work attitude that shows on the court day in and day out.

Here’s a mix by NBATV of his top 10 plays. See how he has perfected the spin move with such grace.

Marcus Williams is a Warrior

Marcus Williams
From ESPN’s Web site:

The New Jersey Nets have traded point guard Marcus Williams to the Golden State Warriors for a future first-round draft pick, sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

The news was first reported by the New York Post.

Williams backed up Devin Harris last season, but Williams’ role grew more uncertain by the acquisition Monday of Keyon Dooling from the Orlando Magic via a sign-and-trade deal.

The Post reported that the pick the Warriors are sending New Jersey is lottery-protected for 2011, meaning the Nets will obtain it if the Warriors reach the playoffs.

Davis, Brand weren’t the only folks plotting

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Basketball, Baron Davis at 11:52 pm by addisport

Agent Zero was made by the Warriors
There’s a rumor in the Golden State Warriors organization that the brass weren’t trying to re-sign coveted point guard Baron Davis in the first place. In fact, from what’s being said, the Warriors only wanted to go after the Washington Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas. I’m guessing they still miss him like I do.

The rumor also reveals why Baron Davis had no loyalty to the Warriors, a team which was his team. Apparently, when the Warriors management was getting ready for the free agent market to open, they expressed interest in Arenas, who told the team he would come aboard if Davis stayed. Some of this was partially reported in the SF Chronicle. But the Warriors weren’t interested in the both of them, they just wanted Arenas. In the following days, Davis opted out and Arenas reconsidered his deal with the Wizards. He’s still currently on the market.

I’m guessing this is about the time Elton Brand and Davis starting having these alleged conversations, but it makes no difference. Davis was already miffed about the situation with Arenas and felt like it was time to move on, pointing a very large finger of blame back at Warriors management.

I happen to think this rumor is more fact than fiction because it gives a better motive than what has currently been presented as Davis’ reason to return to his hometown of Hollywood. I mean, how many careers have been buried under the bright lights of Clipper-dom? So yeah, this gives room for pause on two different levels. 1) Why can’t the Warriors management keep the team’s favorite players (a la Jason Richardson, Antawn Jamison, Arenas, Chris Webber, Tim Hardaway, etc.)? 2) Why did Warriors management consider Davis expendable?

Is there any trust or truth in this whole mess?

An epic failure — Warriors hit the wall

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Basketball, Baron Davis at 11:34 am by addisport

Baron Davis depressed

Last night’s loss to the Denver Nuggets was where the Warriors’ playoff hopes may have come to a screeching halt.

With three games left, the Nuggets on fire, and B-Dub and the crew faltering each step of the way, I will be reluctantly surprised if the Warriors don’t make the playoffs. All I can see to think about is why didn’t I see this coming?

Where was the needed chemistry at the beginning of the year? Where was the low post presence? Where the hell was the defense?

Every step of the way, there was a sign that pointed to this season being exciting (any playoff push is) but equally disappointing. Here we are with one of the most exciting ball clubs in the NBA and they’re going to be on the outside looking in come next week. But the honest truth is, we should have saw it coming.

The Western Conference is getting kicked to the curb

Posted in Culture, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Media, Basketball, ESPN at 12:13 pm by addisport

The Warriors

The most dominant conference this decade is getting played worse than a banjo song in a hip-hop club.

Every time you turn around, East Coast bias is in the air, and only half of it is deserving. If I read one more NBA story on the Three Celtic-eers, I’m gonna gouge out my eyes. Not really, but I’m just pissed I have to watch them on Sportscenter every night when I don’t give a crap about the Celtics, who have sucked for the last 10 years. Currently, at 24-3, they’re the top team in the NBA and that is giving the national media enough reasoning to shove them down our collective throats.

There’s so many stars in the NBA, and yet I only get glimpses of all the talent in the south (Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor) and up north (Luol Deng and Michael Redd). But don’t get me started with how my Warriors are getting shafted with the daily coverage or how the resurgent Lakers are all of an afterthought some days. And can somebody please explain to me how the Celtics are the best team when they’ve yet to face the defending champion San Antonio Spurs or take a crack at the Dallas Mavericks?

The truth is, these guys are getting more play then they should just because they’re in the middle of one of the biggest media markets that tends to influence the producers at ESPN (Errr… duh!). Now if only they could get a producer who is based on the west coast to give a little fair time at the world wide leader, I might stop crying like a guy who is missing the Dream Team because some network exec decides ice skating is more popular (thanks a lot, NBC).

Every day, the continuing savior from east coast bias is my 10 ‘o’ clock news. I can’t help but wonder when the “world wide leader” is going to start acting like newspapers and get local sports shows like Comcast. (Maybe they’ll hire me.) Whatever the case, there needs to be some incentive to spread out the coverage. Wouldn’t you say diverse coverage is good for league with 30 teams? I’d be happy with it, especially if they’re still going to pretend to be the WWL.

He Foyled me long enough

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Basketball at 4:48 pm by addisport

Recall the 5-year $41.6 million contract he was given.

For shame.

Adonal Foyle is probably the most considerate gentleman the Warriors have come across in the last 15 years, but he was also the most overpaid player on the team and in the Western Conference. So when I heard he got bought out for $13 million of the $19.7 million coming to him in the next three years, I did a little dance.

Whew. Now that’s what I call a deal. Albeit pricey, it’s a deal nonetheless that puts the Warriors in position to leave behind the losing of old and entertain a new winning attitude.

In fact, all of the cap space clearing moves the W’s have made is putting the team in a position to court another superstar to the Bay Area. Too bad it wasn’t in time for Kevin Garnett. But we can all dream right?

For a team that was down in the dumps, stuck in 38-win seasons and desperately searching for an answer for the playoffs, Foyle simply wasn’t that answer. In fact, he was the luggage that the Warriors didn’t need. When Erick Dampier bailed, the W’s seemed to go crazy briefly. Garry St. Jean said, “hey, we still needed a center.” So he splurged on Foyle, a career loser and inadequate athlete.

Career stats: 4.4 points per game, 1.7 blocks per game, 5.0 rebounds.

I can just see it now. Foyle is taking that money, hugging that last check against his chest and walking away a rich man who played less in the Warriors’ playoff run than every other player bench player. Thank God for Chris Mullin, Don Nelson and a distant Chris Cohen for realizing and dealing with this turd of a mistake. It truly should be a humbling experience for all parties.

Couple this move with the re-signing of Matt Barnes, one of my favorite players in a long time, and the Warriors are looking more and more like the Dallas Mavericks without a Dirk Nowitski. Next up, signing the coach to an extension and finding a capable big man.

Jackson, Artest suspended

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Basketball at 11:01 am by addisport

In the latest news of a series of unfortunate events, Stephen Jackson and Ron Artest have been suspended by the NBA for seven games each.

The two were suspended for Jackson pleading guilty to criminal recklessness in Indiana after a club shooting and Artest pleading no contest to spousal abuse. Both are already pinned to do community service.

Just goes to show you, getting spanked by the law is not the only punishment you’ll see in the NBA.

Enjoy the video. It has a nice MJ remix to it.

Pay the man!

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Basketball at 11:13 am by addisport

Don Nelson is advertising he wants more money.

I say the Warriors should give it to him. I mean, why not. The guy is making $3.1 million a year — somewhere in the lower tier of NBA coaches. (I know, $3.1 is lower tier!? Crazy talk, I say … crazy talk.) Nelson is trying to get his playoff bonuses (meaning if the Warriors reach the playoffs) guaranteed. That would put him at about $6 million. He is the second-winningest coach in the history of the NBA.

Not too bad for a guy who is 67 and a team that’s fan based is starving for playoff action. Last year only incited the enthusiasm surrounding the W’s. Why not guarantee that the good times will keep rolling by keeping the coach happy? Heck, if the franchise was any good without him, we would’ve been in the playoffs at least once over the last 12 seasons. And with structure and stability, the W’s can only get better.

Ugh… this draft sucked

Posted in Golden State Warriors, Basketball at 1:36 pm by addisport

Of course, I’m only saying this in the perspective of a Warriors fan. So we got, uh, Jelly Belly, Brandan “string-bean” Wright and lost J-Rich.

Needless to say, I’m upset.

We just lost the cornerstone of the franchise. Let it be stated here, loud and clearly, when Baron Davis goes down to injury (and he will) we will have nowhere to turn for go-to scoring. Detractors will say we still have Stephen Jackson and I’ll laugh in their faces. The guy has never been a team-leader in the sense of scoring just like Davis hasn’t been a team leader in the sense of playing 82 games. As much as I love the fact Jackson and Davis showed up big time in the playoffs, they both disappeared from one series to the next.

On the other hand, J-Rich has been there since day 1 of his career. Yeah, he’s had bad games, been overshadowed, and generally regulated as the No. 2 guy when Davis is in the lineup, but he’s still a dynamic threat at any point in the game. And when he’s on fire, the whole building knows it.

But I guess the real angst comes from the incoming prospects lined up to take his spot. Marco Belinelli is supposed to be the next Manu Ginobili, which isn’t bad. I liked this pick at No. 18 even though he was off the map because he can fill a critical reserve role in an extended rotation. But then we shipped J-Rich for B-Wright and I had to stop and think about this.

Doesn’t this guy remind you of Antawn Jamison? I mean, right down to the same school, the same height, and the same string-bean style of play. The trade was outrageous because the Warriors picked up a wedge player when they were in need of defensive presence in the post, something they failed to pick up on. Warriors fans, remember the knock on Jamison? He couldn’t defend the bigger post players and he couldn’t defend the smaller, quicker forwards while he brought offensive rebounding and garbage points. Wright looks practically the same, except he has an earlier developed jumpshot.

Aghhh! (Excuse me while I curse under my breath.)

And then, Monta Ellis, a fine prospect and reserve, is being tossed in to be the new 2-guard. Uh, I thought he was point. Anyways, he’s been branded as the future of the franchise and yet we had to dump the cornerstone of the franchise to make room for him. None of this makes sense but I’m sure Don Nelson and Chris Mullin rationalized this by figuring the fans would revolt if Baron Davis was traded. In all fairness, I agree. But that doesn’t mean we needed to make that move. This is so frustrating, I don’t even want to throw out the alternative of staying pat. (Although, that just did it.)

If we don’t pull down this alleged Kevin Garnett trade, I’m gonna start speeding up this balding.

P.S. We’ll miss you J-Rich.
